Would you like to see more European history videos? Recently, I went on a family holiday to Portugal and I took the opportunity to make a few videos about the history and medieval architecture of Portugal. It’s often overlooked here in England how closely connected England and Portugal were throughout history, especially so during the medieval period. Furthermore, our architecture is fairly similar too, with there being considerable similarities between English and Portuguese architecture in the late 15th and early 16th centuries. Although the Manueline style in Portugal has a clear renaissance flair, it isn’t dissimilar from some of the most ambitious aspects of English Perpendicular Gothic. The monastery of Santa Cruz in Coimbra was a delight to visit. There was so many beautiful and historically fascinating elements. However, I just had to focus on the monument of Alfonso Henrique!
